Choose neutral tones.

Neutral hues like soft creams, grays, and taupe create an atmosphere of tranquility, setting the stage for rest and rejuvenation. A neutral color palette doesn’t have to feel flat, though. To add more visual interest, consider “textured wallpaper or gentle, patterned designs to infuse depth and personality into your space, making the room truly your own,” says Elizabeth Christenson, a marketing specialist for Stonegate Builders.

Layer textiles.

Achieve a sophisticated-yet-approachable ambiance in your primary suite by layering a variety of textiles from floor to ceiling. “Think plush rugs underfoot — perhaps a sheepskin for a soft landing as you get out of bed — and a thoughtfully layered mix of textured bedding,” says Douglas Fisher, vice president and general manager for Fireside Hearth & Home. “Materials like wool, cashmere, and linen transform the space into a sleep retreat that feels both indulgent and totally livable.” Don’t forget about layering window treatments, either. “Combine sheer curtains with heavy drapes for a versatile and polished look,” says Christenson. “These layers balance natural light during the day with privacy and coziness at night.”

Celebrate natural materials.

Natural materials like wood and stone can be used to establish a soothing connection to the outdoors. Features like a wood accent wall or wood ceiling beams, an oak vanity, a freestanding stone tub, or fireplace flames rising out of a bed of river rock are all ways you can ground the space and make it feel trend-proof, says Fisher. Adds Christenson, “Marble floors add an extra touch of luxury, seamlessly blending sophistication with nature’s charm.”

Find the right light.

Lighting can significantly impact the tone and functionality of a space, so making sure you have the right mix of accent, ambient, and task lighting at the proper color temperatures is crucial. “Maximize natural light to make your suite feel bright and airy first thing in the morning,” says Fisher. “Soft, ambient lighting — think sconces, dimmable fixtures, or bedside lamps — keeps the mood relaxed in the evenings.”

Add a fire feature.

Nothing elevates the warmth and coziness of a space quite like a roaring fireplace. “The soft flicker of flames sets a calming tone, perfect for unwinding at the end of the day or easing into a peaceful morning,” says Fisher. “For the ultimate in luxury, consider a see-through fireplace connecting the bedroom to the ensuite bath.”

Introduce greenery.

Plants are known for their wellness benefits, such as reducing stress, promoting better sleep, and improving air quality. But they also double as aesthetically pleasing decor that “introduces an element of nature and creates an organic pop of color,” says Julie Reese, design studio manager for M/I Homes.

Create a spa-like bath.

Achieve a spa environment at home by splurging on luxuries like a soaking tub, heated floors, and dual vanities. Streamlined access to a spacious closet and laundry room is a plus, too. “These thoughtful features create a seamless flow and elevate functionality,” says Christenson.

Select a scent.

Smells can evoke strong emotional responses and vivid recollections, so on your nightstand or vanity, place a candle or incense in a scent that is tied to a peaceful place or happy memory, says Reese. If you’re not sure where to start, opt for lavender, vanilla, bergamot, or sandalwood, all considered to be calming scents.    

Declutter.

The phrase “messy home, messy mind” is not a myth; cluttered spaces lead to stress and distraction — not an ideal way to start or end your day. Organize and clear your room of clutter, including electronics, says Reese, to help you fully unwind and enjoy a restful night’s sleep.
